WSU Wireless with PEAP in Ubuntu

This guide shows how to use the new WSU PEAP wireless deployment with Ubuntu 7.10/8.04 and should work with the various derivatives such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu. This guide assumes you are using Network Manager which is installed by default. If you have chosen to use a different window manager than is default you may need to take steps to launch Network manager

Install the necessary certificates with apt-get install ca-certificates at the command line or by using the Synaptic package manager. The package name is ca-certificates.

  1. Left click on the Network Manager icon on your menu bar
  2. Select "WSU Wireless" from the list of choices (not "wsunexus")
  3. This will bring up a screen that looks like:
  4. Into the "Identity" slot enter your WSU user name

  5. Into the "Password" slot enter your WSU password

  6. Click on the "CA Certificate File" button which will open up a dialog for finding a file.

  7. Navigate to "/etc/ssl/certs/" and select the file "Verisign_Class_3_Public_Primary_Certification_Authority.pem" and then click the "Open" button.
  8. Your screen should now look something like this but with your login information:

  9. Click "Connect"

And thats it! Now each time your computer detects the "WSU Wireless" network and no ethernet connection it will connect with these settings automatically. No more having to connect to the network and then activate the VPN or anything.
