EECS Distinguished Seminar
Bluetooth, The Creation of an International Standard
Dr. Mike Foley, Executive Director
Bluetooth SIG
Abstract: Bluetooth wireless technology is the most successful wireless standard in history. Learn what lead to its past success and what is being done to ensure future successes. Understand why fierce industry competitors work together to create this standard. Hear what lessons have been learned that can be applied in other industries with other technologies.
The Bluetooth standard is different from most standards as it covers all layers of the ISO model. Learn how the technology works, how devices communicate with each other without interfering with others, and how software is written for Bluetooth products. To create a successful system, all these factors must be taken into consideration.
Bio: Dr. Michael (Mike) Foley is the Executive Director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). Dr. Foley joined the SIG in March 2004 as the Executive Director. He is responsible for guiding the qualification and interoperability programs, promotion of the technology, the specification publications, and the long-term roadmap of Bluetooth wireless technology.
Dr. Foley previously worked with Bluetooth wireless technology and other wireless technologies as a senior wireless architect with Microsoft. While there, he played a pivotal role in the creation and development of the wireless desktop vision and 802.11.
Foley holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University (advisor: Anjan Bose), a Masters degree from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
